While it is the best advice to attempt to save teeth that may be diseased for one reason or another, replacing them if they are extracted is also important. Advances with modern dentistry make it possible to save many teeth that present with infection due to cavities or gum disease. These treatments include modern root canal therapy and gum treatments. Sometimes a tooth cannot be saved, or it is extracted due to a patient’s wishes. If these teeth are not replaced, teeth around them can shift, causing bite problems, food packing, cavities, and possible periodontal disease.
Our teeth rely on each other for support, for natural cleansing ability, and for the health of the underlying gums and bone. If a tooth is lost, a chain of destructive events begins. Teeth adjacent to the space begin to drift and extrude, eroding gum and bone support. This leads to decreased support for the teeth and the formation of food trap areas. Plaque begins to accumulate in these areas, causing gum irritation and the potential for cavities. Replacing missing teeth can stop this chain of events.
Bite problems are created when a necessary tooth is taken out of the mouth (this does not include third molar or “wisdom teeth”, which may need to be taken out for other reasons). Once a person has fewer teeth to chew on, the remaining teeth have to carry the load, causing increased wear of these teeth. Missing teeth can also cause jaw joint conditions, such as clicking, popping, and pain.
If plaque remains on a tooth surface for a period of time, a cavity can be formed in that area, and gum irritation can occur, possibly causing gum disease. Tooth loss leads to the formation of areas that are more difficult to clean. Replacing missing teeth recreates the natural cleansing ability of the teeth and decreases the chance of cavities and gum disease.
Many modern, affordable alternatives exist for the replacement of missing teeth. These include aesthetic, bonded bridges, implants, and removable partials. A dentist will be happy to discuss these options with you. Replace your missing teeth for a healthier smile today!
